Reflecting on Germany, Part 3

OHHH YES! Venison and spaetzel lunch in Passau, Germany.Read Part 1 and Part 2 here.

Fortunately Monday's purchase of compression trouser socks mitigated the swelling on a very enjoyable train trip to Passau, "The City on Three Rivers," a city just over 60 minutes away from Regensburg by train, also near the Austrian border. We walked miles and enjoyed a delicious lunch before visiting the Dom St. Stephan, likely the most beautiful church I have ever visited. Conversation with Nate, Cliff and Sarah was good and though admittedly I have a short attention span for some things (reading the historical plaques for example), the day and the company were certainly excellent.

LUNCH. Yum. Passau, Germany
That night however, I lost focus again as a pain in my pelvis started to grow and become unbearable when abducting (opening) the hips and knees and when rolling over in bed. Having helped pregnant women with the compensating pain for this condition previously, I recognized this as SI joint and symphasis pubis pain. The walking I was unused to had exacerbated this new-to-me condition. Again I retreated inward and began to miss the comforts of our home, the stink of our mutts, and our bed and pillows.

PassauDom St. Stephan, PassauLuckily Tuesday was a point of welcome respite and was certainly needed for a mental and physical reset. Cliff had to work in Nuremberg on Tuesday, so Sarah, Nate and I stayed close to home. It was a bit gray and rainy, so after dressing we at and took a short trip to look around. I needed one more pair of compression socks and we wanted to poke around a few shops.

We happily picked up a few items at the gift shop and grocer and retired to our rooms for a few hours of rest and repose for the afternoon. I had a nice walk and a particularly nice cup of coffee (a la Sarah's French Press) and conversation with Sarah and I was able to count myself as genuinely blessed. We hadn't "conquered" a new town, but I felt a deep appreciation for our hosts and our circumstances that allowed for us to get away an experience the vast newness of Bavaria and connecting in community with friends.

To be continued in Part 4...

Note: This is a travel journal of reflections on my first European trip and as a pregnant woman at that. It's not a traditional travel journal. It will be published in many parts.
